while it is true that you can backup the data with everything that can read a POSIX filesystem, you will miss all the metadata associated like extended attributes and ACL’s. 

beside mmbackup (which uses spectrum protect) DDN also offers a product for data management including backup/restore (but also migration and other scenarios) that preserves the metadata information. you can get more info here —> https://www.ddn.com/products/dataflow-backup-archive-data-migration/
