Oh you can upgrade to 5.0, it's just if your file system was created
with a previous version then you won't get to use all the new
features. 

I would imagine if you still had a file system created under 2.3 you
could mount it on 5.0. Just you would be missing a bunch of features
like support for more than 2 billion files, or the ability to mount in
on Windows or ...
