Just to note if anyone is interested, the open beta is now "open" for the transparent cloud tiering, see:

Subject: Re: [gpfsug-discuss] BM Spectrum Scale transparent cloud tiering

Since this official IBM website (pre)announces transparent cloud tiering ...
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/servicemanagement/tc/gpfs/evaluate.html?ce=sm6024&cmp=IBMSocial&ct=M16402YW&cm=h&IIO=BSYS&csr=blog&cr=casyst&ccy=us&s_tact=M16402YW

And since Oesterlin mentioned Cluster Export Service (CES), please allow me to (hopefully!) clarify:

Transparent Cloud Tiering uses some new interfaces and functions within Spectrum Scale, it is not "just a rehash" of the long existing DMAPI HSM support.
Transparent Cloud Tiering allows one to dynamically migrate Spectrum Scale files to and from foreign file and/or object stores.

on the other hand ...

Cluster Export Service, allows one to access Spectrum Scale files with foreign protocols, such as NFS, SMB, and Object(OpenStack)

I suppose one could deploy both, using Spectrum Scale with Cluster Export Service for local, fast, immediate access to "hot" file and objects
and some foreign object service, such as Amazon S3 or Cleversafe for long term "cold" storage.

Oh, and just to add to the mix, in case you haven't heard yet, Cleversafe is a fairly recent IBM acquisition, http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/47776.wss
